Madonna’s fifth and final single from her debut album became another big smash for the future Queen of Pop, this time going even further than “Borderline” becoming her first Top 5 Single on Billboard, the first of a string of 16 consecutive top 5 singles Madonna would achieve in the 1980’s, a record no one else has been able to break to this day. Apparently, there were no plans to release further singles after “Borderline”, as Madonna’s second album “Like a virgin” was ready, but Sire Records decided to capitalize on the sudden success of Borderline and went with it. A wise decision because at the time of the single’s release, the album was charting and peaking at #25, and 11 weeks later it was entering the Top 10 at #8.

As it was becoming customary in many Madonna videos, the video for “Lucky star” did not share likeness to the song’s lyrics. With no storyline, Madonna makes the most of her dancing skills in a seductive choreography, backed up by two dancers, friend Erica Bell and brother Christopher Cicconne, in front of a white background. Without distractions, Madonna’s hypnotic looks, dancing and provocative clothing draw all eyes from the audience into her. The camera shows nothing but love for Madonna and you can tell she enjoys being the protagonist, right at the exact time when she was about to start “ruling the world”. Here is a long extended version of “Lucky star”, which I hadn’t seen before, it features new clips and camera angles.

You must be my lucky star
‘Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
And I need your light
And baby you know

Chorus:
Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
Starlight, (star bright) make everything all right
Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
Starlight, (star bright) yeah

You must be my lucky star
‘Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I’m lost you’ll be my guide
I just turn around and you’re by my side

Chorus…

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right
Uh, come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right

You may be my lucky star
But I’m the luckiest by far
You may be my lucky star
But I’m the luckiest by far

Chorus…

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right
Uh, come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right

(You may be my lucky star, I’m the luckiest by far)
(You may be my lucky star, I’m the luckiest by far)
(You may be my lucky star) You may be my lucky star
(I’m the luckiest by far) What you do to me, baby
You know (You may be my lucky star)
But I’m the luckiest by far

Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
Starlight, (star bright) make everything all right
Starlight, star bright first star I see tonight
Starlight, (star bright)

Starlight, star bright
You make everything all right
What you do to me, baby
You’ve got to stay by my side tonight

(Starlight, star bright, starlight, star bright)
(Starlight, star bright, starlight, star bright)

Starlight, star bright, baby
Starlight, star bright
Stay by my side tonight
What you do to me, baby
What you do, what you do to me, baby
Stay by my side tonight

You may be my lucky star…
