True Blue-1986

Madonna’s third studio album “True blue” took a whole different direction than her two previous albums. She became more involved in the process and for the first time she co-wrote every song on the album and was also credited as co-producer among Patrick Leonard and Steve Bray, who had previously worked with her in “Like a virgin”.  Not only did the overall sound of the album was different but her looks were completely transformed, adopting a look somewhere in between Marilyn Monroe and James Dean,  and singing about more mature and controversial lyrics while incorporating more complex and sophisticated instrumentation. The reaction was inmmediate and it was positive from critics, except some who thought the lyrics to Papa don’t preach were sending the wrong message to young girls, igniting a lot of controversy, thus leading Madonna to try and keep pushing the envelope in future releases, Madonna’s sound and image could change in a million different ways, but controversy would become the only element that became regular.

The album was a complete success, and nowadays is regarded as the album that made Madonna a superstar, the one that proved that she wasn’t just a flash inthe pan, a one hit wonder. With this album, she made the transition from pop starlet to a mega artist, in the same league as Jackson or Springsteen, or Prince. Her videos also became more sophisticated and with every new one, a different approach was taken  constantly changing the image and creating a new set of aesthetics for women in videos. This was recognized by MTV as she was one of the very early honored (and the first female) to receive the Video Vanguard Award in 1986. True blue was number one in a record breaking of 28 countries, and it’s among the best selling albums of all time, with reported sales of 24-26 million worldwide.
