“Express yourself” is Madonna’s 23th overall single and 19th in the United States. It’s the second single from her 4th studio album, “Like a prayer”, and has become another trademark song for Madonna. Conceived as an anthem for female empowerment with the ultimate message to express your feelings, otherwise you won’t get what you want. The upbeat dance-pop anthem became an instant hit for Madonna, her 15th consecutive Top 5 single in the US and reaching Top 5 in many markets around the world. At this stage Madonna was unstoppable, reaching one of the biggest peaks of her ever ascending popularity, and had already become a household name, unfortunately the song was kept from number one by “If you don’t know me by now” by Simply Red, and “Toy soldiers” by the one hit wonder Martika.

The video for “Express yourself” is another highlight in Madonna’s career.  Directed by David Fincher, it earned five nominations, including Best female video, at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards where she gave a memorable performance of the song, and became the inspiration for her next tour, as “Express yourself” became the opener for the Blond Ambition Tour, wearing the Gaultier designed conical bra and the Barbie ponytail, one of Madonna’s most recognized incarnations.
