The fifth and final single from “Erotica”, “Rain” is Madonna’s 37th single and 31th released in the United States. Released in the summer of 1993, while Madonna was rehearsing for her upcoming World Tour “The Girlie Show”, it fared considerably well on the charts, taking into account that it was already the 5th single of the album and considering that 1993 wasn’t a very pleasant year for Madonna regarding all the criticism the media took on her. US radio really embraced the song and helped the single go Top 20 at #14, a much better result than her previous single, the mildly received “Bad girl”. It’s her 28th Top 20 single and 29th entry on the Hot 100. It could also be said that “Rain” helped saving “Erotica” from vanishing from the charts too early, it’s success created a new interest on the album and finally the album spent a healthy 53 weeks on the Billboard 200.

In the elegant video  for “Rain”, directed by Mark Romanek, Madonna tones down her image and shows a softer side, putting aside (at least temporarily) her overtly sexual image. The video garnered two MTV Video Music Awards, for Best Art Direction and Cinematography, but failed to achieve a Best female Video nod. It’s a fan favorite and a highlight in Madonna’s already extensive video reinventions (this time aided by a wig).
