“Deeper and deeper” is Madonna’s 34th single and 29th released in the United States. It’s the follow up to the highly controversial lead single “Erotica”, that even though was a proven hit, it drew many people away. With this single Madonna gives us another insight into “Erotica” and its deep electronic-dance roots. If the single “Erotica” could be deemed as the sequel of “Justify my love”, “Deeper” could well be the sequel to “Vogue”, in fact Madonna incorporates a verse from Vogue in the last part of the song. While both singles did well on the charts, this wasn’t the typical performance you’d expect from a Madonna single, and maybe the time where everything Madonna touched turned into gold was left behind.

The real issue behind the underperforming singles was probably the media criticism of gigantic proportions Madonna had to face in 1993, and also due to the fact that she had already proven herself after 10 years in the business and she wasn’t the new musical sensation in town. However at the end, Madonna would win the battle with the media, but in some extent, I think that the United States actually never forgave her for the Sex book, even though it was a huge best seller there, ironic isn’t it?
