“Like a prayer” is Madonna’s 22th overall single and 18th in the United States. It’s the lead single from her long awaited studio album (almost a 3 year wait) from the same name. Like a prayer represented a huge change in Madonna’s career, at a time when she was trying to convey a more  grown up image, this single incorporated elements of a more rock-pop oriented song, and features a gospel choir. Madonna has always liked to play it big, and after such a long hiatus, she was determined to let the world know she was back, and the best way to do that, at least according to her experience, was to create a huge controversy mixing the right elements of sex and religion.

It became Madonna’s most controversial moment when she released the video to this song, probably the most celebrated one in history after Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. The video compares sexual and religious ecstasy, along with Madonna kissing a saint and her dancing in front of burning crosses, enraged the Roman Catholic church, and eventually was banned in many countries. It also led to the cancellation of Madonna’s sponsorship from Pepsi, and the withdrawal of the Pepsi ad where “Like a prayer” was featured. However,  the success of the single was huge, Like a prayer hit the top spot everywhere, and has become one of her most recognizable and a signature song for her. Definately one of her most gigantic global hits she has had.
