“Papa don’t preach” is Madonna’s 14th overall single and 12th in the United States. Second single from “True blue” as it came right after “Live to tell”, but given that it also belonged to the movie “At close range” and later included in the album, there’s a bit of confusion regarding which one is the album’s first single. On the same vein as “Like a virgin”, controversy was the hot topic here, starting up a public debate regarding teenage pregnancy, but at the same time keeping Madonna on the spotlight. It became Madonna’s fourth number one single in the United States and second in the UK.
