Madonna’s sixth single overall and the first from her sophomore album found instant appreciation among teenage girls by late 1984 and early 1985. The subtle lyrics mixed with the sexual agressiveness Madonna displayed while performing the song on the video, made a profound impact on the younger generation of girls. Here was a woman telling them that it was OK to chase after boys, to be sexually attractive and forward, and not be ashamed of it at the same time, it was a revolution for this girls who many of them came from a generation of very conservative parents, and they quickly followed the trend. Hundreds of thousands of “Madonna wannabe” girls were vying to emulate their idol, making Madonna an icon at the same time.

Personally I find “Like a virgin” to be Madonna’s second signature song after “Holiday” and the song that catapulted her into stardom and global chart domination. The video is also worth watching, no matter how many times you’ve watched it, it’s filled with subtle details and lots of symbolism. As it was becoming customary, Madonna personifies different and opposing characters on the video, the virginal bride and the raunchy slutty woman who dances aboard a gondola in Venice.

It has been performed on five concert tours and many of those have ignited some kind of controversy. The video got three nominations at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Choreography, losing to Elton John’s “Sad songs”, Best Art Direction losing to Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” and Best Cinematography, losing also to Don Henley. Madonna was one of the biggest pop artists of 1985 and oddly enough, she did not perform on the awards that year.
