Madonna hit the bulls’ eye (finally) with her third single “Holiday”. This song was brought on board thanks to John “Jellybean” Benítez, who found it after it was rejected by many artists. It was first released to clubs, were Madonna had a sure chance for a hit, and after it took the number one spot on the dance charts, it was sent to radio where it started gaining notoriety. It became Madonna’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and first Top 20 single, and all this without the help of a video (according to several sources, a low budget video for Holiday was shot, but apparently the results were so bad, they decided not to show it).

Although it’s not a song penned by Madonna, it sure fits her like a glove and it was the perfect release at the perfect time, this was the single that put her on the spotlight. The simple but effective lyrics, the repetitive hook, and the feel-good theme of the song have made it a classic for Madonna and her first ever signature song.

It has been performed by Madonna to death in all of her tours, only failing to show up at The Confessions Tour (2006), and having been performed so much it’s the one song that Madonna has reinvented the most. Despite not having a video for its original release, “Holiday” got the video treatment with the release of Madonna’s 1991 documentary “Truth or dare”,  earning four nominations on the 1992 VMA’s, for Best Female Video, Best Dance Video, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography.

Holiday, celebrate
Holiday, celebrate
If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be
It would be so nice
Everybody spread the word
We’re gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It’s time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together
To release the pressure
We need a holiday
If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate (Common let’s celebrate)
Just one day out of life (Holiday)
It would be
It would be so nice
If we took a holiday (Oh yeah, oh yeah)
Took some time to celebrate (Common let’s celebrate)
Just one day out of life (Just one day out of life)
It would be
It would be so nice
You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your trouble down
It’s time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together
And make things better
We need a holiday
If we took a holiday (Holiday)
Took some time to celebrate (Common let’s celebrate)
Just one day out of life (Just one day out of life)
It would be
It would be so nice
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Common let’s celebrate
We have got to get together
Holiday, celebrate
Holiday, celebrate
If we took a holiday (Oh yeah, oh yeah)
Took some time to celebrate (Common let’s celebrate)
Just one day out of life (Holiday)
It would be
It would be so nice
(Holiday)
Oh yeah oh yeah
(Celebrate)
Common let’s celebrate
(Holiday)
Just one day out of life
(Celebrate)
It would be so nice
(Holiday)
Holiday, celebration
(Celebrate)
Come together in every nation
(Holiday)
Holiday, celebration
(Celebrate)
Come together in every nation
(Holiday, celebrate)
(Holiday, celebrate)
We’ve got to get together
Take some time to celebrate
(Holiday, celebrate)
(Holiday, celebrate)
Just one day out of life
It would be so nice
(Holiday)
Holiday, celebration
(Celebrate)
Come together in every nation
