Burning up was the second single released by Madonna, and it’s also considered the second single from her debut album. This release included Physical attraction on the B-side, which can also be found on the same album. Burning up went on the same track as her previous single “Everybody” which didn’t ignite the charts, but “Burning up” fared a bit worse failing to make an entrance on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Chart, however it became another hit on the dance charts, peaking at #3 in the Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart, and it helped her to cement a reputation as a dance act.

MTV at the time was a little reluctant to play dance acts videos, nonetheless they agreed to timidly showcase the video for “Burning up”. Directed by Steve Baron, it her the first video ever to appear on MTV and it portrays Madonna showing her unashamed passion for her lover in various seductive poses. Simple as it may seem, the video has been deeply analized by several authors over the years and is the first time Madonna plays two different characters in a video, one submissive and one powerful, this characterization would be found later in many videos made by Madonna. At the end of the video Madonna is defiant, driving the wheels of her own car after ditching her lover, clearly stating that she doesn’t need any man in her life (or carreer) to take care of her. “I can do it alone” is the main message.

Don’t put me off
‘Cause I’m on fire
And I can’t quench my desire
Don’t you know that
I’m burning up for your love
You’re not convinced that that is enough
I put myself in this position
And I deserve the imposition
But you don’t even know I’m alive
And this pounding in my heart
Just won’t die
I’m burning up
I’m burning up, burning up for your love
I’m burning up, burning up for your love
I’m burning up, burning up for your love
For your love
You’re always closing your door
Well that only makes me want you more
And day and night
I cry for your love
You’re not convinced that that is enough
To justify my wanting you
Now tell me what you want me to do
I’m not blind and I know
That you want to want me but you can’t let go
Come on let go
I’m burning up, burning up for your love
I’m burning up, burning up for your love
I’m burning up, burning up for your love
For your love
Do you wanna see me down on my knees
Or bending over backwards now
Would you be pleased
Unlike the others
I’d do anything
I’m not the same
I have no shame
I’m on fire
Come on let go
Do you wanna see me down on my knees
Or bending over backwards now
Would you be pleased
Unlike the others
I’d do anything
I’m not the same
I have no shame
I’m on fire
Oh yeah, I’m burning up
Oh yeah, I’m burning up
Common common, I’m burning up
Uh uh uh, I’m burning up
Oh yeah, I’m burning up
Common common, I’m burning up
Oh yeah, I’m burning up
You know you got me burning up baby
You know you got me burning up baby
Burning up for your love
Burning up for your love
